Marquez proves he’s the man, Win over Diaz solidifies Marquez’s position as one of the world’s top fighters

By Dan Rafael

HOUSTON — Juan Manuel Marquez has suffered many disappointments in his career.

Naseem Hamed outright ducked him for years when the Prince was at the top of the featherweight division.

Marquez also never got to fight a prime Erik Morales or Marco Antonio Barrera, the two great Mexican countrymen of his era, although he did eventually beat a faded Barrera.

He suffered a controversial draw against Manny Pacquiao in their first fight and then lost a split decision in the rematch a few years later. Legions believe — and believe strongly — that Marquez won both fights.

For one fight, Marquez went to Chris John’s home country of Indonesia for a featherweight title bout and lost what many believe was a hometown decision. read more

Pacquiao to use footwork vs. Hatton

By Jun Medina

Good footwork is a key element of Manny Pacquiao’s successful boxing career, a tool he used to advantage in pummeling to submission the bigger and stronger Oscar De La Hoya in their December 6 fight.

It’s a device he would need to employ again to the hilt when he tangles with British junior welterweight star Ricky Hatton in their coming May 2 bout, according to his renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

Nigel Collins, editor-in-chief of The Ring Magazine, observed that the signature move Pacquiao used in his “Dream Match” against De La Hoya carried the Filipino icon to his upset victory by “largely nullifying Oscar’s biggest weapon, his concussive left hook.” read more

Pacquiao-Hatton Premonition: Down goes Pacquiao!

By Gerry Balasta

t’s the 11th round, of this epic battle. Pacquiao waits in his corner as he looks at Hatton across the ring. The Hitman’s face is a bloody mess, but determination sees through his eyes, and Pacquiao, well you might as well call him Pretty Pinoy Pacman (PPP), no marks, no hits, absolutely flawless. We see Pacquiao’s face waitng, the bell rings and they meet in the middle. With a blinding speed, Pacquiao storms at Hatton with a series of combinations, the hitman eats a lot of gloves. The Pac bobs and weaves and Hatton couldn’t get a shot in. He then clinches the Pac. The referee breaks them, it took a few seconds and as soon as they were separated, Hatton moves forward, pushes the Pac then bends his head down. Hatton anchors himself and delivers a huge blow on Pacquiao’s left kidney. read more

Being considered a modern version of the legendary Henry Armstrong–regarded by experts as one of the best boxers, if not the best, of all time—is probably the biggest compliment that can be given to any boxer of the present generation.

And that’s exactly what The Ring Magazine, considered the “the Bible of Boxing” did as it showcased current pound-for-pound top boxer Manny Pacquiao along Armstrong in a six-page spread in its April issue. read more

Over the weekend, a news story was published in The Daily Telegraph that reported how Ricky Hatton’s assistant trainer Lee Beard predicts a stoppage win for “The Hitman” in his mega fight against Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd. Beard even said which round he believes his fighter will score the KO or stoppage in – the 6th..

Naturally, such talk will be seen as nothing more than the usual bravado a fighter and/or his team members are expected to have when approaching a big fight. However, Beard says he has made his prediction based on a number of “mistakes” the Filipino great has been seen to make in a number of his more recent fights. According to the article, the assistant coach has also been present “a couple of times” when “Pac-Man” has been training in the gym. Here too, Beard claims he saw Pacquiao make mistakes his fighter Hatton will capitalise on come May 2nd. read more
