By Michael Marley

Edwin Valero’s tonguelashing of the other lightweights competing on the Golden Boy April 4 “Lightweight Lightning” card in Austin, Texas, was taken somewhat personally by Jorge Barrios.

I am not sure why a Class B fighter—and that’s all the Argentinian fighter is—would take such offense at prefight palaver. read more

Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton – And the Winner Is…

By John Benz

Anyone who thinks they know who is going to win May 2nd’s battle between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton is kidding themselves. This is one of those fights that if I were a betting man, I’d be terrified on who I should put my money on. I was one of the first to go one record that Oscar De La Hoya didn’t have much of a chance against Pacquiao, but Hatton is different. Much different. read more

Will the Golden Boy call it a career?

By Dan Rafael

Pardon Oscar De La Hoya if he just doesn’t know what to do. The 10-time titleholder across six weight divisions is really struggling right now.

Should he stay?

Or should he go?

It has been three months since he took the beating of his life, an eighth-round TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao in which the favored De La Hoya was not at all competitive against a smaller man. After the eighth round, his face swollen and his spirit broken, De La Hoya retired on his stool, and many wondered whether it would be the last time they saw him box.

Since a postfight interview with HBO’s Larry Merchant in the ring following the bout, De La Hoya has kept a low profile. He didn’t attend the news conference after the fight because he was at the hospital, and he came out of his cocoon only briefly in January to help promote a mixed martial arts event with which his company, Golden Boy Promotions, was involved. read more

Hatton admits he’s brutal

By Joaquin M. Henson

IBO lightwelterweight champion Ricky Hatton, the personification of a British Bulldog, was quoted in the March 2009 issue of Boxing Digest Magazine as considering a shift to mixed martial arts because in his own words, “I’m a brutal fighter.”

Hatton, 30, is booked to stake his crown against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on May 2.

“You can never say no,” said Hatton, referring to the possible move. “MMA is a little bit brutal and I’d say I’m a brutal fighter. But boxing is very much my sport and I’d like to think I have a few more years in that yet.” read more

PACQUIAO-HATTON, Premonition Part 2: The Pacific Storm Rises

by Gerry Balasta

Hatton will always have that lucky punch. The one punch that “a boxer never sees coming”. We’ve seen it before and it could happen again. Instinctively, Hatton just has that gift to sneak a good one in. So many men before him have gone down with it, the greatest boxers of different eras had encountered nd went down with similar punches in the past.
For those of you who had been following this column, you all know that I have always believed in the Pac or the Pacific Storm. It is rooted not in boxing science, graphs, statistics or premonition. It is instead rooted in the promise and hope that is inherent in each one of us. read more
