Our First Pound-For-Pound Top 20 List Of 2009

By Tim Starks

As usual, my criteria includes, in approximate order of importance: recent activity, career achievement and overall ability.

1. Manny Pacquiao (junior welterweight): Some might make an argument for Pacquiao’s rival Juan Manuel Marquez to take the spot, and I wouldn’t put up too much of a fight, but it’s not the argument I’d make. It’s my personal opinion that Pacquiao and Marquez should be 1-1 against each other right now, but the record says Pacquiao’s 1-0-1 against Marquez. And as good as Marquez was this weekend, Pacquiao still has an overall better career resume. Only losing to Ricky Hatton in May can drop him from the #1 spot, really, and winning would put more distance between #1 and #2. Manny’s the best. He’s likely going to stay that way at least until he fights Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Marquez again or Shane Mosley, and even then he could just as easily sweep that fearsome foursome. Which is not the same as saying it would be easy. read more

Doghouse Boxing’s Top 20 Pound-for-Pound Fighters

By German Villasenor

1. Manny Pacquiao (Super Lightweight – 140 lb.)
Heir to Floyd Mayweather, spot further solidified with domination of De La Hoya, retirement of Calzaghe.

2. Juan Manuel Marquez (Lightweight – 135 lb.)
Recent stoppage of lineal champion Casamayor in first bout at lightweight, along with close fight with Pac-man last year, clearly deserving of number two on my list.

3. Bernard Hopkins (Light Heavyweight – 175 lb.)
Fought about even with Calzaghe (formerly number 2 on my list) though in a losing effort, went on to dominate previously unbeaten Kelly Pavlik.

What’s the latest news?
I’m doing good. I’ve been relaxing and trying to get better so I can get back in the ring and fight for all my fans.

Many fans of boxing were awed by your fights against Rafael Marquez. It was three entertaining and thrilling fights. Do you wish to meet him once again it in the ring?

Rafael Marquez and I made history together. We fought the greatest trilogy ever. I think we gave boxing fans all over the world something to cheer about. And I would most certainly do it again. We are both warriors. read more

Unified super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan punished Jorge Arce over eleven brutal rounds Saturday night before a stoppage and in my estimation can be crowned the King of the division. And while some hard core segments of the sport feel that there is unfinished business with flyweight champion Nonito Donaire after he knocked out Darchinyan back in July, 2007, “The Raging Bull” has surpassed Donaire in ability and more importantly in marketability. read more

Now Big Gary Shaw knows how Bobby Pacquiao feels when he’s getting smashed by an opponent.

The promoter of Vic Darchinyan is taking so many hits from Pinoys you would think he’s the one who told Imelda Marcos to buy all those pricey shoes.

But, in steering Darchi clear of a revenge rematch against Nonito Donaire, Shaw is just doing his job and I think doing it well. read more

When promoter Gary Shaw came right out and said Saturday on Showtime that there’s no way he’ll let Vic Darchinyan fight Nonito Donaire Jr., he was only repeating information you might have learned right here on examiner.com. last week.

Darchinyan (32-1, 26 knockouts), coming off Saturday’s 11-round whipping of super flyweight challenger Jorge Arce, would like nothing better than to fight Donaire (20-1, 13 knockouts), whose 2007 knockout of Darchinyan is the definitive flyweight division bout of recent years. But Donaire, largely inactive after that fight, dumped Shaw as his promoter last fall in favor of Bob Arum and Top Rank. read more

Vic Darchinyan TKO11 Jorge Arce… In Anaheim, California world junior bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1 25 KOs) dominated and stopped Jorge Arce (51-5-1 39 KOs) via eleventh-round technical knockout. Arce landed a couple of first-round shots but was lunging with his head. Darchinyan let Arce come towards him, motioning Arce forward. Darchinyan then stunned Arce against the ropes with some hook shots. Darchinyan clearly won the round. Arce started the second coming forward with his head and again paid the price, getting hit by a right that made him stumble back. Darchinyan picked up the pace and pelted Arce with a barrage of punches. Arce was trying to hit Darchinyan in the jaw but could not get in close enough. His punches were wide and Darchinyan took advantage of the openings. The third round featured fierce exchanges as Arce landed some punches of significance. Arce opened a cut over Darchinyan’s nose to end the round. read more

At the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, IBF/WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) battered and bruised Jorge Arce (51-5-1, 39 KOs) for eleven brutal rounds of punishment.

Arce was a bit tentative in the first round, jumping in and getting nailed by Darchinyan’s right hands and uppercuts. When Arce tried to circle around, Darchinyan’s left hands found their mark and opened a cut under his left eye. Darchinyan went right to work in the second, landing lefts and rights that battered the face of Arce. A combination of punches peppered Arce as he was trapped in the corner.

In the third, a hard left began a rally for Arce. The two would brawl at close range with both fighters getting in some good punches. read more

Former flyweight titlist Vic Darchinyan began 2008 on the comeback trail, and ended the year as a unified three-belt champion and strong contender for Fighter of the Year.

With Manny Pacquiao, last year’s winner, not fighting until May, Darchinyan jumped out to an early start in 2009, adding to his impressive run of collecting junior bantamweight scalps with a systematic beatodwn of Jorge Arce. A grudge match three years into the making, Darchinyan dominated throughout en route to an 11th round knockout in their Showtime-televised main event.

The bout aired live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The crowd never seemed to know which way to root for much of the high-contact affair.read more

In a super flyweight superfight, IBF, WBC and WBA unified champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) scored a punishing eleventh round TKO over WBA interim champ Jorge Arce (51-5-1, 39 KOs) on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Darchinyan had a big first round rocking Arce with big bombs. Darchinyan continued to punish Arce in round two. Arce turned things around in round three, landing some shots that bloodied Darchinyan. Good action in the fourth, Arce was rocked in the last minute. The rounds continued to be competitive with an edge to Darchinyan. Arce was wobbled in round seven. Round eight was one-sided for the champion as Arce was clearly wearing down. Darchinyan opened a cut over Arce’s right eye in the eleventh as Arce continued to take a beating. The doctor stopped the bout after the eleventh. Scores were 109-100 on all cards.
