Pride of Pomona Shane Mosley Gunning for Cotto, Hatton, or Pacquiao Next

By Ricardo Lois

Shane Mosley (the best welterweight in the World) and Ricardo Lois (the biggest mouth in the boxing radio World) meet up for a serving of humble pie.

You might remember that the always out-spoken Lois recommended fight fans to bet heavy on Antonio Margarito to destroy the Fighting Pride of Pomona.

After Lois bows down to Mosley, Sugar lets it be known that he is hunting down Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao. read more

Will the Golden Boy call it a career?

By Dan Rafael

Pardon Oscar De La Hoya if he just doesn’t know what to do. The 10-time titleholder across six weight divisions is really struggling right now.

Should he stay?

Or should he go?

It has been three months since he took the beating of his life, an eighth-round TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao in which the favored De La Hoya was not at all competitive against a smaller man. After the eighth round, his face swollen and his spirit broken, De La Hoya retired on his stool, and many wondered whether it would be the last time they saw him box.

Since a postfight interview with HBO’s Larry Merchant in the ring following the bout, De La Hoya has kept a low profile. He didn’t attend the news conference after the fight because he was at the hospital, and he came out of his cocoon only briefly in January to help promote a mixed martial arts event with which his company, Golden Boy Promotions, was involved. read more

British lambs to the slaughter

by Mark Gregory

Let me first of all preface this article by saying that ultimately boxing is all about levels, and that at Madison Square Garden on the 21st of February, Miguel Cotto demonstrated – as most expected – that he was a clear level or two above Manchester’s Michael Jennings. Let me also say that British fighters are no more prone to being the victims of one-sided ‘world’ title defeats than fighters of any other nationality.

The purpose of this article is to explore some potential reasons why the likes of Michael Jennings and Gary Lockett – the two most recent examples of Brits being outclassed in overseas ‘world’ title fights – find themselves beaten without even having the chance to steal a round or two from their more celebrated opponents. read more

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will be in for a tough, competitive match when he fights British junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton on May 2, according to Pacquiao’s renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

Roach, who has trained 17 world champions, said he is devising a new game plan for the Hatton fight, which will be completely different from the strategy used in the Filipino icon’s last fight against Oscar De La Hoya. read more

A Dream match it most certainly was not, but what did we learn from this showcase? Well, firstly Oscar De La Hoya is well past his best – sadly it looks as though old father time had caught up with The Golden Boy which happens to us all and secondly he was obviously weight drained from making the 147 pound mark. This is not taking anything away from Pac-man’s win but saluting the end of an era in that De La Hoya will never be what he once was, and let’s face it he once was a force to be reckoned with.. Let us not forget the battles with Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sugar Shane Mosley, Hector Camacho, Whittaker, Quartey and of course J C Chavez.

We also learnt that Pacquiao could fight comfortably at 147 lbs (come fight night he weighed in at closer to 149lbs) and he had lost none of his speed, power, agility, aggressiveness coming up to that weight, bearing in mind that Pac-Man started his career at light flyweight (106lbs) then moving up to super bantam weight 122lbs, where he captured the WBC title and defended it five times before moving up to super featherweight and securing the titles there, and settling at lightweight 135lbs ripping the WBC title from David Diaz and finally joining old boy Oscar in the aforementioned “Dream Match”
