In a very interesting article that has appeared on Wales Online, the recently retired Joe Calzaghe spoke of how he chose to quit the game, primarily, because there were no obvious and big fights out there for him right now at either super-middleweight or at light-heavyweight. Had “The Pride of Wales” been a naturally smaller man, however – say a light-welterweight or a welterweight – Calzaghe says he would have relished being involved in today’s talent-rich 140 and 147-pound weight divisions for some time to come…

…With guys like Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather all still out there, Joe says had he been their size he would not now be putting his feet up. How awesome would it have been if the man many are now calling the best British fighter in boxing history had been a smaller and lighter man? How would Joe’s speed and work-rate have faired had it been pitted against the likes of Hatton, Mayweather or Pacquiao? read more

MANILA, Philippines—If Ricky Hatton stands tough and firm inside the ring, the way he did in the screaming purse tug-of-war against Manny Pacquiao, then we’ll have a hell of a fight come May 2.

After all, Hatton has long been reputed to be an unforgiving dockyard brawler.

This means he should be hard and difficult inside the ring, doubly menacing than when he grimly stood his ground during the purse negotiations. read more

While Manny Pacquiao partied with showbiz friends in Guam the other night, his promoter, Bob Arum, has started lining up the Pinoy superstar’s next opponent.

Pacquiao flew to Guam for a concert of GMA Pinoy TV where he was a special guest, and according to his lieutenant, Bren Evangelio, also took time out to promote his coming fight with Ricky Hatton…

…Meanwhile, Arum said Edwin Valero is now on standby as Pacquiao’s next opponent.

Arum, who owns the promotional rights over both fighters, told boxingtalk.com that Valero, the knockout specialist from Venezuela, is indeed being groomed as next in line for the Pinoy pound-for-pound champion. read more

Will Manny Pacquiao end Ricky Hatton’s career ?
There are many who think so. The retirement of Joe Calzaghe in the last week in the UK, followed by debate and counter-debate, has focused again the spotlight on Hatton, who faces arguably the most dynamic pugilist on the planet at present in Pacquiao. He’s also a politician to boot.

But it could spell the end, and one which Hatton refuses to contemplate at present. Pacquiao has the destructive style to finish a fighter. Oscar De La Hoya, for example, shouldn’t fight again.

He was destroyed by Pacquiao. Yet one suspects De La Hoya’s fighting ego will refuse to allow him to end a wonderful career on such a poor note. That was not the De La Hoya we know who was dismantled by Pacquiao last December. read more

Vic Darchinyan TKO11 Jorge Arce… In Anaheim, California world junior bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1 25 KOs) dominated and stopped Jorge Arce (51-5-1 39 KOs) via eleventh-round technical knockout. Arce landed a couple of first-round shots but was lunging with his head. Darchinyan let Arce come towards him, motioning Arce forward. Darchinyan then stunned Arce against the ropes with some hook shots. Darchinyan clearly won the round. Arce started the second coming forward with his head and again paid the price, getting hit by a right that made him stumble back. Darchinyan picked up the pace and pelted Arce with a barrage of punches. Arce was trying to hit Darchinyan in the jaw but could not get in close enough. His punches were wide and Darchinyan took advantage of the openings. The third round featured fierce exchanges as Arce landed some punches of significance. Arce opened a cut over Darchinyan’s nose to end the round. read more

At the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, IBF/WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) battered and bruised Jorge Arce (51-5-1, 39 KOs) for eleven brutal rounds of punishment.

Arce was a bit tentative in the first round, jumping in and getting nailed by Darchinyan’s right hands and uppercuts. When Arce tried to circle around, Darchinyan’s left hands found their mark and opened a cut under his left eye. Darchinyan went right to work in the second, landing lefts and rights that battered the face of Arce. A combination of punches peppered Arce as he was trapped in the corner.

In the third, a hard left began a rally for Arce. The two would brawl at close range with both fighters getting in some good punches. read more
