Edwin Valero’s tonguelashing of the other lightweights competing on the Golden Boy April 4 “Lightweight Lightning” card in Austin, Texas, was taken somewhat personally by Jorge Barrios.

GL: It’s been a while since we’ve had you on Boxingtalk. We recently broke the news about your fight with Julio Diaz on the HBO pay-per-view April 4th. Can you give us some thoughts on the bout and tell us what we can expect to see from you against Diaz on fight night?

Joel Casamayor: “I’m very excited. It’s a great fight and we’re both top five contenders in the division. I think beating a guy like Julio Diaz puts me right back in position to fight the winner of Marquez-Diaz or Nate Campbell. There’s also Edwin Valero who’s moving up to lightweight on that night. But you’re going to see Cepillo back in action. I’m making my comeback with my original trainer Israel Salas, who was my original trainer back in Cuba when I was a kid. I plan on making my last run with him and now you’re going to see me doing some of the old things I was doing when I was a kid.” read more

Venezuelan KO artist Edwin Valero is satisfied to be with Top Rank and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, and is planning on big money matchups with Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao and Juan Diaz among others. Valero, a former WBA super featherweight monarch, and now official lightweight challenger will next fight for the WBC interim belt. “The fight will be April 4 in the city of San Antonio, Texas,” said Valero. “I know that my rival Antonio Pitalúa is strong because I have seen him fight. But I assure him that he does not punch batter than me and he will not be able to handle my offense. Valero is currently in Venezuela resolving personal matters but sources indicate that he’s there to attend the political elections this weekend.

All the talk about Manny Pacquiao facing guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley or Antonio Margarito is driving Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum nuts.

“It’s silly,” Arum told the Bulletin yesterday when asked about recent reports linking Pacquiao’s name to future fights with some of the most recognizable names in the star-studded welterweight division. read more

While Manny Pacquiao partied with showbiz friends in Guam the other night, his promoter, Bob Arum, has started lining up the Pinoy superstar’s next opponent.

Pacquiao flew to Guam for a concert of GMA Pinoy TV where he was a special guest, and according to his lieutenant, Bren Evangelio, also took time out to promote his coming fight with Ricky Hatton…

…Meanwhile, Arum said Edwin Valero is now on standby as Pacquiao’s next opponent.

Arum, who owns the promotional rights over both fighters, told boxingtalk.com that Valero, the knockout specialist from Venezuela, is indeed being groomed as next in line for the Pinoy pound-for-pound champion. read more

MANILA, Philippines —Manny Pacquiao is not bothered by Ricky Hatton’s bragging that he will beat the Filipino boxing icon in their upcoming mega-bout on May 2.

The British boxer said during his press conference last week that he will steal the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter title from Pacquiao.

In interview with GMA News’ James Velasquez Monday, Pacquiao said he would rather train hard than listen and think of Hatton’s threats.

The report was aired on GMA News’ primetime newscast “24 Oras.”

During the interview, Pacquiao did not promise to bring home the bacon, but he said he would give his best for the country.

“Ako’y hindi nangangako pero gagawin ko lahat ng aking makakaya at lahat ng aking magagawa sa ring para makapagbigay ng magandang laban at makapagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bansa [I'm not promising to win but I will do my best to give a good fight inside the ring and for the country],” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao is set to fly to the United States on February 24 and is expected to train in Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles.
